THE HOUSE OF GENERATIONS

Site Area: 8 cents
Location: Edapally
Area: 3200 sq.ft (renovation)

The site is just five minutes walk from Lulu Mall yet the precinct was surprisingly green. The client wanted to built a new house renovating an existing 50 year old house. Living with his aged parents the idea was to create an identity that incorporates modern day needs and at the same time echoing the ethos of his ancestral background since the house is located in the vicinity of their ancient homestead (tharavad). Our challenge was to modify the house justifying the three generations living under the same roof and the ancestral context. We decided to demolish some part of it while the other half was retained. We planned the new requirements without connecting it with old RCC thus giving the option for any future modifications. Hence a long linear court cum light well was placed as a buffer between two portions. The design was a response to strong context of traditional houses in a row along the street.
